He later fought valiantly in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, dueling two Death Eaters at once before being incapacitated in a duel with Bellatrix Lestrange. Under the administration of Rufus Scrimgeour, Shacklebolt was assigned to protect the Muggle Prime Minister, posing as his new secretary. During the escape from Privet Drive known as the Battle of the Seven Potters, Shacklebolt acted as a protector, flying a Thestral with a Polyjuice Potion-disguised Hermione Granger. After the Ministry of Magic fell to Voldemort's forces, it was Kingsley's Patronus, a lynx, that arrived at the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour to deliver the grave warning: “The Ministry has fallen. Scrimgeour is dead. They are coming.” Forced into hiding, Shacklebolt continued to fight for the resistance. He co-hosted the clandestine radio program, Potterwatch, under the pseudonym “Royal.” His deep, calming voice provided news and messages of hope to other resistance members. He returned to Hogwarts for the final battle, where he took a leadership role, organizing fighters and leading defensive groups. During the final stages of the Battle of Hogwarts, he, alongside Minerva McGonagall and Horace Slughorn, bravely dueled Lord Voldemort himself.

Immediately following Voldemort's defeat, Kingsley Shacklebolt was named the acting Minister for Magic. His appointment was later made permanent. As Minister, he worked tirelessly to purge the Ministry of corruption, track down the remaining Death Eaters, and overturn pro-pure-blood legislation.
