Verne Troyer

Verne Troyer (1969-2018) was an American actor, comedian, and stunt performer. In the Wizarding World, he is known for providing the physical portrayal of the goblin Griphook in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (film). Outside of the Harry Potter franchise, he was widely recognized for his role as Mini-Me in the Austin Powers film series.

Troyer was cast as the Gringotts goblin, Griphook, for the first film. In his scenes, he guides Harry Potter and Rubeus Hagrid via a cart through the subterranean tunnels of the bank to both the Potter Family Vault and the high-security Vault 713. While Troyer performed the role on-screen, the character's voice was provided by English actor Warwick Davis, who also played Professor Flitwick in the same film (film). When the character of Griphook returned with a much larger role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the part was played entirely (both physically and vocally) by Warwick Davis (film).

Verne Troyer's contribution to the Harry Potter films is a notable example of a character being created through the collaboration of two different performers. The decision to have Warwick Davis dub the lines for Griphook in the first film created a vocal consistency when Davis later took over the entire role for the final two films (film). Troyer's performance established the physical presence and mannerisms of the character that were later built upon in the Deathly Hallows adaptations.
