Invisibility Task Force

The Invisibility Task Force is a specialized unit within the Beast Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures at the Ministry of Magic. Its primary responsibility is to handle incidents where magical creatures have been seen by Muggles, thereby enforcing the International Statute of Secrecy. The Task Force works to contain the creature and often collaborates with other Ministry of Magic bodies, such as the Office of Misinformation, to provide plausible, non-magical explanations to the Muggle community for any disturbances caused.

The Invisibility Task Force is mentioned on several occasions throughout the 1990s, typically in relation to high-profile magical events that risk exposure to the non-magical world.

  • In 1992, Gilderoy Lockhart claimed in his book Wanderings with Werewolves to have “advised the Invisibility Task Force on the containment of a particularly troublesome Banshee”. Given Lockhart's propensity for fabricating his achievements, the validity of this claim is highly doubtful.
  • In the summer of 1993, a Daily Prophet article about the escape of Sirius Black from Azkaban mentioned the Task Force. The article noted that the Ministry of Magic was liaising with the Muggle Prime Minister and suggested the Invisibility Task Force would be involved if Black attempted to use any of his “old haunts,” implying they also help secure magically significant locations from Muggle detection.
  • In August 1996, the Daily Prophet reported that the Invisibility Task Force was struggling to capture a Kelpie residing in Loch Lomond. The creature had attracted significant Muggle attention by frequently transforming into the form of the Loch Ness Monster. This incident highlights the direct, hands-on nature of the Task Force's work in containing magical beasts.

As a Ministry of Magic entity, the Invisibility Task Force operates within a clear hierarchical and collaborative structure.

The Invisibility Task Force is a world-building element primarily featured in the novels to illustrate the constant effort required by the Ministry of Magic to maintain the International Statute of Secrecy. It has not been mentioned or expanded upon in the film adaptations, video games, or other supplementary materials.
