The Lovegood family is a wizarding family known for its eccentric members, unwavering kindness, and steadfast loyalty to the cause against Lord Voldemort. The most prominent members are Xenophilius Lovegood, the editor of the magazine The Quibbler, and his daughter, Luna Lovegood, a close friend of Harry Potter. The family is characterized by its open-mindedness, its belief in creatures and phenomena not recognized by mainstream wizarding society, and its deep-seated goodness.

Little is known about the extended Lovegood lineage. The family in the modern era consists of Xenophilius Lovegood, his wife Pandora, and their daughter Luna Lovegood. Pandora Lovegood was a witch who, according to her daughter Luna, “liked to experiment.” When Luna was nine years old, one of Pandora's spells backfired, leading to her accidental death. Luna witnessed the event, which enabled her to see Thestrals. Following his wife's death, Xenophilius raised Luna on his own. He instilled in her the family's unique worldview and continued to publish The Quibbler from their home near Ottery St Catchpole. During the Second Wizarding War, the Lovegoods were among the few public voices supporting Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore. The Quibbler was the only publication to print Harry's story about the return of Lord Voldemort, making the Lovegoods a target for the Ministry of Magic under Voldemort's control. In 1997, Death Eaters kidnapped Luna from the Hogwarts Express to force Xenophilius into compliance. Desperate to save his daughter, Xenophilius attempted to turn Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger over to the Ministry of Magic when they visited him for information about the Deathly Hallows. The trio managed to escape, and Xenophilius was subsequently imprisoned in Azkaban. He was released after the end of the war.

The Lovegood family is defined by its non-conformity and its belief in the unseen and unproven. They are firm believers in the existence of creatures like the Crumple-Horned Snorkack and Nargles, as well as concepts like Heliopaths and the political machinations of Rotfang Conspiracy. This often leads to them being perceived as odd by the wider wizarding community, with Luna earning the nickname “Loony” Lovegood at Hogwarts. Despite their eccentricities, the family possesses immense courage and a strong moral compass. They are fundamentally kind, loyal, and brave, willing to risk everything for their friends and for what is right. Their home is a reflection of their personality: colourful, eclectic, and filled with love.

• Luna Lovegood: Luna proved to be a surprisingly skilled and resilient witch. As a member of Dumbledore's Army, she learned advanced defensive magic and fought bravely in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, and the Battle of Hogwarts. She is capable of casting a corporeal Patronus Charm, which takes the form of a hare.
• Xenophilius Lovegood: While his primary skills lie in magical journalism and research, Xenophilius is a competent wizard. When attempting to capture the trio, he used a Stunning Spell, though his aim was poor and he inadvertently hit the Erumpent horn in his living room, causing a massive explosion.
• Pandora Lovegood: Described as a witch who enjoyed spell creation and experimentation, suggesting a high level of magical talent and creativity, though it ultimately led to her untimely death.

• Lovegood House: The family's residence, located near the village of Ottery St Catchpole. It is shaped like a large black rook and is filled with peculiar decorations and painted murals.
• The Quibbler: A wizarding magazine edited and published by Xenophilius. It is known for its articles on conspiracy theories and fantastical creatures, but it later became a key source of pro-Potter propaganda during the Second Wizarding War.
• Dirigible Plums: Unusual orange, radish-like fruits grown on a bush by the family's front door. Luna often wore them as earrings.
• Deathly Hallows Symbol: Xenophilius wore a necklace bearing the symbol of the Deathly Hallows to identify himself to other believers in the quest.
• Erumpent Horn: Xenophilius owned a large horn which he misidentified as being from a Crumple-Horned Snorkack. Hermione Granger correctly identified it as a dangerous Class B Tradeable Material.

The Lovegoods were close allies of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Luna developed strong friendships with Harry, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, and Ginny Weasley. Their public support for Harry made them enemies of Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. The family also maintains a friendly relationship with the nearby Weasley family.

The surname “Lovegood” is a compound of two simple English words: “love” and “good.” This straightforwardly positive name reflects the family's inherently kind, benevolent, and virtuous nature, setting them in stark contrast to families with more sinister names like Malfoy (from the old French for “bad faith”) or Gaunt.

• In an interview, J.K. Rowling described Luna as the “anti-Hermione,” as Luna's beliefs are based on faith while Hermione's are rooted in logic and facts.
• According to post-novel information from J.K. Rowling, Luna Lovegood became a famous Magizoologist, discovering and classifying many new species of magical creatures. She eventually married Rolf Scamander, the grandson of Newt Scamander, and they had twin sons named Lorcan and Lysander. (Pottermore)
• In the film adaptations, Luna is portrayed by Evanna Lynch and Xenophilius is portrayed by Rhys Ifans. Pandora Lovegood is not seen but is mentioned.
